Here is a copy of the draft assignment directions. It has not been handed out yet. I am posting this to give you an idea of what to expect.

Tips for Picking Your Item

As you explore your house looking for an item for the Larger than Life project, think about the following Do's and Avoid's. Only one of each type of item will be approved. So have backups. :)

Do
-pick geometric items
-pick simple items
-pick items larger than 1 in and smaller than 5 in.
-pick items that are relatively light as they will be hung from the ceiling
-think about how you will build the larger item with materials you can purchase/find
-pick an item that you are okay with being separated from for a couple months and the final project will be hung in the classroom until Open House (5/18)
-do pick items that have little to no writing on them (you can cover the text with paint or some other cover; text may not be enlarged using a computer or photocopier-must be hand-drawn)

Avoid
-avoid items with text as each thing will have to be measured and magnified 4 times (unless you cover it with a colored paper)
-avoid items with clear parts (hard to find materials to make the enlarged version)
-avoid heavy items as they will be hung from the ceiling of the classroom

Some Examples from Previous Years

Here are some strong examples of items that are relatively geometric.

This pencil sharpener is more challenging but doable. It has clear parts which is really challenging to find material to build the enlarged example. There are also many smaller parts to measure like the sharpener hole, the narrower bottom, etc. So these are some things to keep in mind.

The mini frame has simple, easy to measure dimensions that can be easily enlarged 4x and can be made relatively easily using materials you can find or purchase.

This battery, while interesting, has a lot of text on it. All that text would need to be measured and hand-drawn larger. It should not be enlarged with a photocopier or computer.
